Day Diving Trip Report:
Dive Master: Jessie Harper
Accidents or Close Calls: None
Location(s): Los Islotes, El Bajito
Surface Conditions (Sun, Wind, Waves, Temperature):
Today there was a beautiful morning full of promise. We had a nice ride out to Los Islotes and the weather just got better as the day progressed. The sky was in full sun and the wind and waves calmed throughout the day.
Under water Conditions (Visibility, Temperature, Thermocline, Current):
At Los Islotes, the water was very nice. With visibility near 50’ and a mild current, the dives went well. The water is warm, 78°F and there was no thermocline to speak of. At El Bajito, the current was stronger, but not enough to detour any of the divers.
Description of the day’s events:
We had a great day of diving. On the Rio Rita, we left port in full sun. Arriving at Los Islotes, we made our first dive through the Arch which was full of fish. After making our way, a bit deeper, to the eastern point of the island, we were graced with a ceiling of fish. Big and small, there were too many to count and they were hanging just in the current. We hung with them for some time until a turtle caught our attention. After that, we encountered a herd of grazing Trigger Fish. There must have been over a hundred together. They have all just finished hatching their young, so they were hungry. The second dive, we went through the arch again and met with an entertaining group of sea lions playing in the shallows. We had another follow us throughout the dive, watching what we were doing. Several Blue Spotted Jawfish were seen in the sand along with a few “hidden” Stone Fish. In the shallows, the sea lions put on a great show, playing and rolling around in the rocks. We were permitted by the big male to watch, but not get too close. For our third dive, we put down our anchor at El Bajito. There was a bit of a current, but we were able to descend without problems and hide in the cracks and crevices of the big rock. We saw many of the local inhabitants hiding in the cracks too. The visibility slowly deteriorated during the dive, so we came up and headed for home.
