Day Diving - Trip Report 08/12/08
Day Diving Trip Report:
Tuesday August 12th, 2008
Dive Master: Jessie Harper

Accidents or Close Calls: None

Location(s): Los Islotes, Salvatierra, Swanee Reef

Surface Conditions (Sun, Wind, Waves, Temperature):
Another beautiful day in Baja… Lots of sunshine and a nice breeze graced us all day. The waves were mild and the air was very warm. This made for a great day out on the ocean.

Under water Conditions (Visibility, Temperature, Thermocline, Current):
Today, the visibility was a good 35’ and the current was mild. On the front side of Los Islotes, we fought a good current to get close to the shallows where the sea lions play. As the water was around 78°F and there were no thermoclines, the dives were very pleasant.

Description of the day’s events:
Our first dive was at Los Islotes to see the sea lions. After passing through the arch, we headed for the shallows to “play”. One highly enthusiastic sea lion came in to check us out and was a little rough with a couple of the divers. He would grab a fin and tug pretty hard, most of the divers thought of it as great fun. We must never forget that they are wild animals and we are visiting them in their territory. Half of the divers were enjoying themselves so much; they wanted to stay to watch the fun. Another sea lion came in and they began playing hard. Apparently they were not acting properly, so a big male came in and put an end to the game. After that all the divers continued along the island on their dive. The eastern end was full of life and a large school of Barracudas was seen drifting along with the current. Everyone came out of the water with different stories of the amazing animals they saw. The next site was Salvatierra with all of the life that lives there. Having been underwater for many years, the wreck has absolutely become a diverse habitat. We found small Jaw Fish building nests and large Groupers hunting among the schools of tiny fishes. The mild current made for a relaxing dive, but still all the animals were out. Leaving the depths for a shallower dive, we went to Swanee Reef. Always alive with something different, the divers went in search of what was out today. Another large school of Barracuda was seen lurking just outside the reef, the schools of scad are growing larger every day, the Balloon Fish are congregating, and one bright orange and green poka-dotted Frog Fish were all talked about on board after the dive. Another great dive. We headed home with calm seas and great memories.

Every dive we see more life in the area. The season has really started out well.
