Day Diving - Trip Report 07/29/08
Day Diving Trip Report:
Tuesday July 29th, 2008
Dive Master: Jessie Harper

Accidents or Close Calls: None

Location(s): La Reina, Swanee Reef

Surface Conditions (Sun, Wind, Waves, Temperature):
It was a beautiful morning with a light breeze and full sunshine. Heading south was easy as we had calm seas and warm air.

Under water Conditions (Visibility, Temperature, Thermocline, Current):
Today, the water was very warm, 82°F and a couple of the divers dove with minimal layers. The visibility was pushing 50’ at La Reina and fell slightly to 35’ at Swanee Reef. There was a slight thermocline very close to the surface at 4’ and the currents died down as we approached greater depths

Description of the day’s events:
At La Reina we did two great dives. The first was on the eastern side of the rock and we nearly made it to 70’. There were a few small schools of fish in the water column and the reef was filled with young fish. We even found a small frog fish in the coral. The second dive, we crossed through the canyon and over the middle passage. We encountered many different species and watched the sea lions playing in the shallows. On the way to the next dive site, with little breeze, we spotted several sea turtles sunning themselves on the surface. We also encountered the dolphins again and played a bit with them. At Swanee Reef, the reef was alive with the usual business: cleaning, breeding, and feeding. There were many species of eels out and about, along with the ever curious puffers. The divers had a great time wrestling in the sand as we approached the panga. Back on the panga, we had a quick ride back to the dock.
