Day Diving Trip Report:
Saturday July 12th, 2008
Dive Master: Peter Schalkwijk
Accidents or Close Calls: None
Location(s): Los Islotes, Suwanee
Surface Conditions (Sun, Wind, Waves, Temperature): Cool morning with a slight breeze and small chop, flattening out midday.
Under water Conditions (Visibility, Temperature, Thermocline, Current):
Visibility was around 30 ft above the thermocline and a little lower below. The thermocline was at around 55 ft where the temperature dropped about five degrees. The surface temperature was in the mid 70’s Fahrenheit. There was low to no current at Los Islotes and a strong current at Suwannee.
Description of the day’s events:
We did our first two dives at Los Islotes, going around the eastern end on the first and then going towards the main colony and the small cave on the second. On our first dive we enjoyed the rock formations and the huge schools of scissor tail damsel fish. On the second we enjoyed the sea lion rookery, where the babies are starting to play and the males aren’t behaving as territorially. For the third dive, we dove Suwannee where the current was very strong on the surface but manageable at depth. Suwannee remains one of my favorite dive sites just because of the huge amount of fish! Great day in the Sea of Cortez!!
