Day Diving Trip Report:
Dive Master: Jessie Harper
Accidents or Close Calls: None
Location(s): El Bajo, Los Islotes, El Bajito
Surface Conditions (Sun, Wind, Waves, Temperature):
Slight breeze in the morning, calming before we arrived at El Bajo. Freshening breeze after the second dive. Stiff warm breeze against us on the ride home. Beautiful sunshine and a nice view of the thunderheads above La Paz all day.
Under water Conditions (Visibility, Temperature, Thermocline, Current):
Visibility was over 40’ above 40’ at El Bajo, but dropped considerably below the thermocline and the current was mild. The other sites had +50’ visibility with a current that built from mild to considerable as the dives progressed. The water was beautiful, clear, and warm (80°F) in general.
Description of the day’s events:
On our way to the dive site, we found three large pods of dolphin playing on the surface. They gave us a good show by jumping in the air and riding the bow. We also saw a great number of “popcorn manta” or Mobula jumping near the island. The first dive of the day was at El Bajo in order to complete the Deep Dive section of an Advanced Course that was being taught on the boat. We went down and found low visibility below the thermocline at 40’ and continued in order to finish the dive. There was a lot of life on the rock, but little to be seen in the blue. At Los Islotes, we dove the west end and were greeted by a few sea lions. We gave one big male his space. El Bajito turned out to be full of life as we arrived safely from the current which was tugging at the surface. With eels in every crack and octopus peering from holes, we were treated to a great dive. A large school of Pacific Creolefish descended on the reef as we were there, and many different types of Nudibranchs were seen. There was evidence of recent fishing activity which we cleaned up. It was a full day of diving overall.
