Day Diving Trip Report:
Saturday August 2nd, 2008
Dive Master: Jessie Harper
Accidents or Close Calls: None
Location(s): La Reina
Surface Conditions (Sun, Wind, Waves, Temperature):
Early morning greeted us with a nice calm sea and partly cloudy skies. As we rounded the corner and headed south, the wind from the SW started to build slightly. The air was warm and the sun came out for a while. The waves built gradually, but everything calmed again by mid day.
Under water Conditions (Visibility, Temperature, Thermocline, Current):
Today, La Reina was alive with fish. With 40’ visibility and 79°F water, we had two pleasant dives. There was a mild current running and no thermocline at depth to speak of although the top three feet of water was very warm.
Description of the day’s events:
The first dive, we spent the majority of time in the canyons. Drifting along with the schools of fish and spotting the many hidden creatures that live along the walls. An octopus was seen hunting along the cracks which the divers had a good time observing. Several sting rays and Morays posed for photos. After a pleasant surface interval, the second dive was equally as successful. The graceful Morish Idol was very popular along with a large school
of Machetes. Being the last dive of a weeklong trip for this group, everyone lingered in the water as long as possible, snorkeling with the small group of sea lions that hunt around the rocks. During lunch a Marlin was seen jumping out of the water chasing a flying fish. The ride home was warm and sunny till we came into the Bay of La Paz where a storm was waiting for us. The lightning over the Mogote was impressive and the wind was strong. Entering safely into the slip, we all packed up and headed to the warehouse to clean gear and pack up for the trip home.
