Day Diving Trip Report:
Dive Master: Jessie Harper
Accidents or Close Calls: None
Location(s): Isla Ballena, Fang Ming, Salvatierra
Surface Conditions (Sun, Wind, Waves, Temperature):
We had strong winds and a few high waves on the ride out. We had full sun and lots of fresh air. After the first dive, the weather calmed to a mere breeze and flat oceans, so we had a very pleasant and warm afternoon.
Under water Conditions (Visibility, Temperature, Thermocline, Current):
There was absolutely no current and good visibility at Isla Ballena, because it is protected from the weather. The other two sites had a bit of current and good (40’) visibility. There was no significant thermocline, and the water was warm.
Description of the day’s events:
With the difficult weather, we made the decision to dive Isla Ballena since it is protected. Submerging, we found the rocks rather devoid of life. There was no water movement to stir up much life, but we did find a Stone Fish with the tail end of his meal sticking out of his mouth. At the end of our dive, we ended up in a large cavern and had a good view of the volcanic rocks. Having calm weather, we moved to the Fang Ming. There is a large amount of life living on and around this wreck. The tiny fry were so thick at one point that I could not see one of my divers through the school. We checked on the Fine Spotted Jaw fish that is living along side the wreck. He has had his babies and is waiting for the next generation to come about. As we were there, a turtle appeared out of the haze and gave us a good look. At the next wreck, the Salvatierra, there was also a huge amount of life. With a good current running, the large fish were out in force, but the visibility was very good, so the prey fish were not being taken advantage of too badly. Enormous Balloon Fish were hiding in the windows and big Jacks were hiding under the wreck. The wreck was alive as usual. We had a nice trip home and enjoyed happy hour with a great ocean view.
